Melissa Pemberton

U.S. Aerobatic champion selects Trig - read her story and find out why she flies with Trig

Melissa Pemberton is literally tearing up the skies in the U.S. with an incredible world class aerobatic routine. Displaying her Edge 540 aircraft at major air shows and events (such as EAA Airventure, Sun’n Fun and the Reno Air Races) Melissa has selected Trig to equip her latest high performance machine. This is part of a comprehensive avionics update that includes a compliant ADS-B Out, this will allow Melissa to receive a full ADS-B In traffic service, enhancing her aircraft’s visibility and safety.

“My Trig transponder, TY91 radio and TN70 are going to be part of my aircraft upgrade. High performance aerobatic aircraft like the Edge 540 are weight and space critical, Trig equipment is fabulously compact.”

She shared, “The radio is quick to tune – something that’s really important when my focus has to be outside the cockpit. The TT22 transponder allows me to meet the 2020 Nextgen ADS-B Out requirements.” Melissa is working on a new display with her partner Rex, an accomplished sky diver and BASE jumper. Together they are developing a combined act that will see Rex flying with a rigid jet wing alongside Melissa, she will perform aerobatics and fly formation with him in freefall. Rex has always had a sense of adventure, he was the youngest Australian to climb Mt. Everest and the 7 Summits.  He and Melissa met while BASE jumping and skydiving together in Australia.  Rex added “This is going to be a fantastic display – we are currently working on some technical apsects to ensure the best performance from my flying wing. I’m very excited to be working on this really original spectacle that builds on our established wingsuit and aerobatics display.

The story of how Melissa came to start her flying career was inspired by her grandmother, “I was lucky enough to be introduced to flying as a teenager. My grandmother took me flying – as soon as I took the controls I was hooked!  She would do loops and rolls with me in her Cessna 150 Aerobat, the same aircraft that both Rex and I learned to fly in later with my grandfather, Leo Janssens.”

Melissa has been totally dedicated to her profession, she’s the youngest female pilot to have made the US Unlimited aerobatic team at only 22.  Now 30, she won 2 silver medals in the last World Championships and has her sights are set on gold!  Melissa is an inspiration to flying audiences and Trig is delighted to be supporting her success.
